Description
Few sailing yachts have a pedigree quite like S/Y AELLO.
Built in 1921 by renowned German naval architect Max Oertz for Greek merchant and yachtsman Antonios Benakis, AELLO was a legendary Greek sailing yacht with deep ties to the country’s sailing tradition. Benakis was the founder of the Yacht Club of Greece, whose newsletter still bears AELLO’s name today.
After years sailing the Mediterranean, AELLO was purchased by a Baron and Admiral of the British Empire, who embarked on an ambitious voyage around the world. Following World War II, the yacht took on a very different life as a houseboat, spending years in a mud berth before her restoration began in 1985. That restoration eventually brought AELLO to Maine and Florida and incorporated salvaged teak from a similar 1919-built vessel—making her restoration a fitting example of the enduring value of reclaimed materials.
AELLO returned to the water in grand style, going on to win prestigious regattas including the Transatlantic Race in 1997 and the Antigua Classic Regatta in 2002 and 2004.
Now, a piece of AELLO’s sailing legacy lives on in this limited-edition Sea Bag. The vintage sails have been thoughtfully transformed into a handsome, leather-trimmed tote featuring antiqued brass hardware, a clasp closure and an interior zip pocket. A period map print depicting AELLO’s home port of Athens, Greece, adds another touch of her storied past.
The sails came to Sea Bags by way of Jon Finger, a windjammer captain in Rockland, Maine. When a set of vintage sails he acquired proved too large for his own boat, he held onto them for a time before realizing they belonged somewhere special. Today, their next chapter begins here.
